ORPFaculty and exempt employees of the University of Tennessee or the Tennessee Board of Regents may choose between membership in Group I of the Tennessee Consolidated Retirement System (TCRS) and membership in the Optional Retirement Program (ORP).

TCRS is a 401(a) defined benefit retirement plan.  The State manages this entire program including investments. Benefits are defined according to length of service and salary.  The Optional Retirement Plan ORP is an alternate 401(a) defined contribution retirement plan. This is a participant directed investment program.  Benefits are based on your account balance.
A one time window to transfer is available to move to TCRS from ORP or ORP from TCRS upon attaining five years of service.

All services for the ORP are provided through one of the authorized investment service managers.  The investment service managers provide investment products, communication, enrollment, record keeping, custody, participant meetings, and call centers in cooperation with the higher education benefits offices under the oversight of the Tennessee Consolidated Retirement System.
