The Board of Directors oversees Tennessee’s Captive Insurance Program. The duties of the Board are found in T.C.A. § 9-8-103. The Board of Directors of the State of Tennessee Captive Insurance Company provides general oversight of Tennessee’s Captive Insurance Company.

The Captive Insurance Company was formed in June 2022. The main purpose for creating the Captive Insurance Company was to avoid using traditional commercial insurance companies, which have been extremely volatile in pricing over the past years. Through the Captive Insurance Company, the State expects to reduce its overall costs, have the ability to insure difficult risks, and have direct access to reinsurance markets, which will increase the likelihood of savings in premiums and other costs associated with the purchase of insurance from the traditional insurance market.

The Company only insures the State of Tennessee’s potential losses, exposures and risks of the executive, legislative and judicial branches of the Tennessee state government including, but not limited to, Tennessee public institutions of higher education. Initially, the Captive Insurance Company will provide the cyber liability and all-risk property coverages. All other lines of coverage, such as fine arts, crime, etc., will continue to be purchased using traditional commercial insurance companies.

Tennessee Board of Claims Staff Meeting

The Board of Claims staff will meet at 9 a.m. (CT) December 2, 2020 via WebEx

The Board of Claims staff will meet at 9:00 a.m. (Central Time) on December 2, 2020 via WebEx. In the interest of public safety and welfare, this meeting will be held by electronic means only and will not occur in a physical location.

The staff will review the following:

  • Statement of Necessity
  • Review and Approval of Minutes of October 13, 2020 meeting
  • SAS Actuarial Report
  • Defense Counsel Report
  • Opportunity for Public Comment
  • Other Business

The meeting will be conducted permitting participation by electronic or other means of communications pursuant to T.C.A. § 8-44-108.
