TN Incentive Program for Volunteer Firefighters

The TN Incentive Program for Volunteer Firefighters is a length of service award program allowing participating local governments and tax-exempt organizations to provide financial rewards to volunteers performing firefighting and prevention, emergency medical, and ambulance services.

The Tennessee Department of Treasury was authorized by the 112th General Assembly to establish a length of service award program allowing participating local governments and tax-exempt organizations to provide financial rewards to volunteers performing firefighting and prevention, emergency medical, and ambulance services.

The TN Incentive Program for Volunteer Firefighters is designed to recruit, retain, and reward volunteers for their commitment to the community.

Participating entities may designate an annual contribution up to $6,000 to be made to a volunteer’s account per year of service. These contributions are invested on behalf of the volunteer to provide a future monetary benefit.

Eligibility and Benefits

To be eligible to receive benefits from the TN Incentive Program for Volunteer Firefighters, an individual must be a bona fide volunteer.

A bona fide volunteer is someone who receives no compensation for the services and instead receives only reasonable reimbursement or nominal stipends. It is the responsibility of the participating entity to determine who qualifies as a bona fide volunteer and to develop a criteria for awarding contributions.

TN Incentive Program for Volunteer Firefighters contributions, and any associated investment earnings, may be distributed to volunteers upon attainment of age 45 and completion of five years of eligible volunteer services or in the event of a death or disability.

Information for Participating Volunteers

If you have received a TN Incentive Program for Volunteer Firefighters award contribution from a volunteer entity, you can view and manage your account with these resources.

Online access and customer service for the TN Incentive Program for Volunteer Firefighters will be provided by RetireReadyTN. To get started, you must register your online account on the RetireReadyTN Participant login webpage.

Once you have registered your account, you may log in to:

  • View your account balance
  • Designate your beneficiary
  • Change your investment options
  • Request a distribution (once vesting and age requirements are met)

The TN Stable Value Fund is the default investment option for TN Incentive Program for Volunteer Firefighters contributions. You may also elect to invest contributions in the Fidelity Puritan Fund. You can review the performance of both funds in the Fund Performance Overview.

State Grant Funding

The State Treasurer established a grant program to support local participation in the TN Incentive Program for Volunteer Firefighters. Participating entities may receive up to $200 per eligible volunteer or $5,000 total (whichever is less) for the purpose matching contributions made to volunteers’ accounts. Grants will be awarded on a first come, first served basis. Applicants must meet the requirements established for TN Incentive Program for Volunteer Firefighters adoption and participation as well as the grant program.
