Notification of additional coverage for data security breach

TCRS has alerted retirees and their beneficiaries that their personal information may have been included in a May 2023 data security breach experienced by MOVEit Transfer, a file transfer software utilized by Pension Benefits Information (PBI), a vendor that TCRS contracts for services. Files that contain personal information, including name, social security number, date of birth, and address may have been accessed by unauthorized third parties as part of this breach.

A second communication dated October 2 or 3 has been sent directly to retirees and beneficiaries regarding an opportunity to receive ten years of Identity Defense Complete. The Tennessee Department of Treasury has contracted with Epiq Global to provide additional help to protect those impacted by the May 2023 breach.

To date, we are not aware of any reports of identity fraud or improper use of your information as a direct result of the May 2023 incident. TCRS remains committed to maintaining the privacy of personal information in our possession and continues to take precautions to safeguard it. We continually evaluate and modify our practices and internal controls to enhance the security and privacy of your personal information.

Return to work

Retirees can return to work with a TCRS-covered employer for 120 days within a 12 month period, without losing their retirement benefits, as long as the individual does not exceed certain salary restrictions. For Higher Education, this can be 120 days or 18 semester hours.

To get started, simply complete and return the appropriate form below to TCRS prior to the start of your employment.

Unless you are retired on disability, you can always return to work for a private employer without restrictions.

Contributions to your 401(k) and/or 457 plan

A retiree returning to work for 120 days or less may elect to contribute to the 401(k) and/or 457 plan, but will not receive any matching contributions from the state. If a 120-day employee desires to contribute, he or she should call RetireReadyTN at (800) 922-7772.
